Will it fly?

The story goes like this... In the first world war the British were being overwhelmed by the greatly superior German aircraft. So new developments were ordered and specifications developed. New aircraft were designed at great speed to meet the new requirements. But they had one fatal flaw - they kept crashing! Eventually a new test was added - will it fly?

This may seem far-fetched, but it's surprising how many products, services and projects don't actually meet their basic requirements. We come across them all the time!

Broadband networks

There is a lot of argument at the moment regarding what is the best approach to superfast broadband delivery.  The fibre purists say that fibre (preferably point-to-point) is the only way to go for a future-proof solution.  But the main network operators aren’t offering that as a solution.  The Government and local authorities are stuck in the middle - they want to do something, but how to agree on the best compromise?

What’s clear to us is a classic problem of poor product development.  The network operators are offering what they can deliver easily.  The activist end users assume that what’s good for them is good for everyone - once they understand properly.  The reality is that not enough has been done to really understand what’s wanted and create a product to suit.

“An ambition to deliver a ‘digital hub’ in every community in the country is at the heart of  the Government’s £830 million strategy to make sure the UK has the best broadband network in Europe by 2015.”

BDUK

The Digital Hub approach offers a way forward, but it’s not right yet.  Getting the detail right is critical - and with over £150 million of public money at stake, it’s surely worth the effort?
