A widening gap...
Enterprise support is critical to our future economic success, but a recent study on the economic strength of cities throughout the UK has shown that the current economic conditions are increasing the gap between the most and leas successful areas.
Areas such as Cambridge have seized the opportunities that resulted from the changing economy and are well placed to grow as we emerge from the recession. But areas that were already at a disadvantage going into the recession have been worse hit, and are less ready for the recovery.

Foundations for growth
Enterprise strategy focuses on the foundations for growth. Just as businesses need to identify their unique strengths in the market, as well as the changing market needs. The economic viability of an area or region depends on harnessing the core existing strengths, as well as adapting to the new challenges.
Providing the foundations for success and growth is essential. Many new businesses will fail before they are properly established. As a result, the overall impact of new business formation can actually harm the local economy (explanation here...). An effective enterprise strategy is essential to future economic strength.
